SAPS was launched in January 1990 with the following aims:

- Develop new educational resources

- Promote the exciting teaching of plant science and moleular biology

- Interest young people in plants and in moleular biology

To achieve its aims SAPS has established an extensive programme which:

- works with teachers to develop new resources to support teaching of plant science and molecular biology

- publishes simple protocols for investigating various aspects of plants

- has developed a range of low-cost kits for practical investigations

- runs workshops for teachers in plant science and molecular biology
